"I can't explain that feeling I get when I hear music that speaks to me,” Alison Wonderland, real name Alex Sholler, recently tweeted. “But it hurts my heart. In a good way.” I enquire about the tweet and the Aussie producer tells me it was in reference to the moment she fell in love with electronic music. “When I heard The Knife, I remember taking two steps back in this club and I was just like ‘Holy crap, how is this making me feel so much and it’s coming from something electronic?’”

A lover of hip hop, punk and indie, the classically trained cellist fell for the genre and wanted to make music that would make someone else feel that way. “I’ve always had this philosophy that if you’re not feeling what you’re making then who else is gonna feel it? I didn’t ever want to make music that I thought people were gonna hear, I wanted to make music as therapy. And, I guess, with that honesty comes something that speaks to people.” Such is the case with her newest trap-tinted belter of a single, “Messiah”, which she wrote in one day at a particularly difficult point in her life. “Every song I write is my diary, but that song was really intimate. I was honestly quite nervous to release it, but I think the right people are taking the right message from it, which is cool.”

Now in the process of finishing off her second album, the follow-up to 2015's Run, Sholler has amassed a legion of loyal and devoted fans and often retweets their tattoos dedicated to her. And she is as dedicated to them as they are to her. When I ask her what it’s like to perform in front of so many who love her, she gets emotional, “It just fucking makes me appreciate everything that I’ve been given and I will never take that for granted. I think of people even giving a tiny bit of a shit about me and I can’t believe it.”
